As regards the Roman church reconstructed over the 12th century, only the cupola of the south transept has survived. The reconstruction undertaken in the 15th century was interrupted by the wars of religion and the damage they wrought to the nave; the labors resumed in the 17th century. The edifice presents the strange silhouette of an unfinished Gothic construction site. Magnificent sculpted arching on the entrance door. Built in the 15th century in the heart of the historic centre, St Peter's Cathedral is astonishing for its massive and imposing porch bell tower. It is characterised by the contrast between the architecture of its bell tower and the subtlety of its sculpted portal. The finely worked stone is like refined lace. This vast gothic building was a victim of the clashes of history. Its nave was destroyed and then rebuilt in the 17th century, and its unfinished bell tower is covered by a metal dome.
