The Arnoult takes its source near Saintes and when it passes from the hills to the marshes, it turns into a canal named "canal of Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult". The Arnoult was canalized in 1812. In this old arm of the sea accumulated sediments and organic matters. The valley is famous for these vegetables and especially the mojette (small white bean) Pont l'Abbé. Swamp waters that invade the land in winter bring leaves and humus that make the land fertile.
