In the heart of the village of Vénérand, go back in time 2,000 years, through the mill gate and discover the fountains! This site is currently undergoing development work and is not accessible to the public. After the opening of a first aqueduct between Saintes and the Font-Morillon spring at Fontcouverte, it was at Vénérand and Le Douhet that the Romans decided to increase the flow of water at the end of the 1st century by creating two branches. At Vénérand, the canalization was disturbed after it was abandoned in the 3rd or 6th century to use the area as a quarry. In the 18th century, the water was channelled again, a mill and 2 fountain-washhouses were built: the fountain-washhouse of the Mill and the washhouse of La Roche, which was built a little further on and comprises two interlocking basins. A pleasant and cool place to stroll!
