Saint-Sauvant is situated in the valley of the Coran stream, a right bank tributary of the Charente which crosses the commune from north to south. Saint-Sauvant was crossed from west to east by the ancient Roman road from Saintes to Lyon, the Agrippa road, which cut through the Coran valley. It probably followed the Pidou valley to the east, before its course became straight from Lorgère and Tatre towards Cherves-Richemont (Charente). Since 2011, the commune has also belonged to the "Villages de pierres et d'eau" network, a label initiated by the General Council to promote exceptional sites with the particularity of being located on the edge of a body of water (sea, river, pond.). It obtained the "Petites Cités de Caractère" label in 2018.
